Kailua’s ‘Summer’s Cool’ Exceeded Expectations

OVER 120 STUDENTS enjoyed Kailua’s Summer School Learning Fun. The children came from various schools in the area as well as regular Kailua students.

There were six homeroom classes, each with a maximum of 10 students: Toddlers, Kindergarten Intensive English, Kindergarten Advanced, Elementary Intensive English, Elementary Advanced and Eiken Advanced class. An extended afternoon program was also made available for children who wished to have further English instructions, performing arts drama, songs and dances, piano lessons and soroban (abacus).

Friday afternoon in each of the summer school week was award assembly time to issue summer school attendance certificates as well as Eiken certificates. It was standing room only at every afternoon assembly as most parents came to watch the awards and the performances. For the presentation, the classes had the option to explain to the audience what they learned during the week, or perform a song and dance related to the themes.

It may be worthwhile to share some of the “thematic” songs featured each week, as the children really enjoyed learning and performing them: kindness song – Some Kind of Wonderful; unity song – I’d Like to Teach the World; Politeness song – Fill Your Bucket; Humility songs – I Will Be More Humble and Lay It Down; Perseverance song – Imagine the Impossible.
Feedback from parents was very encouraging. At the end of the final assembly, several parents enrolled their children in our upcoming WINTER SCHOOL that will have the theme “Christmas in Hawaii”.
