Literacy Week at JIES

Literacy Week (October 19-23) was a successful event for the JIES community again this year. The events that took place throughout the week included a Book Fair, Spelling Bee, Character Parade, teacher-led reading groups and a mother tongue reading event. It was wonderful to see the JIES students become enthusiastic participants during the week.

The Book Fair this year has been a great success, as students were able to purchase new and pre-loved books. Thank you to all the families that donated their books.

The Spelling Bee and Character Parade were held on Tuesday of our Literacy Week. Students were able to sign up and participate in a school wide Spelling Bee, where students worked in groups to spell the words correctly. Students from the winning team received a certificate. As for the Character Parade, the students enjoyed dressing up as their favorite literary character and displayed enthusiasm as they showed off their creations for the school community. There were three awards given for Kindergarten to Grade 1, Grade 2 to 3, and finally Grade 4 to 5.

Finally, we had our teacher-led reading groups during guided reading. This is when teachers chose their favorite book and read it to a group of students. All students were able to have each teacher’s story read to them by the end of the week. On Friday, we had some kind parents volunteer reading stories in their native language.
