St. Alban’s Nursery becomes independent

St. Alban’s Nursery is proud to announce the beginning of a new phase in its history as one of the longest-serving international preschools in Tokyo.

As of November 1, while still enjoying its prime location just up from Tokyo Tower in the quiet, leafy surrounds of St. Alban’s Anglican-Episcopal church, the program became independent and is no longer directly under church management.

Long-term Tokyo resident and businesswoman Roslyn Hayman has taken over as Executive Director, and plans to provide every possible support to program Director Gilma Yamamoto- Copeland in developing and carrying the program forward.

Gilma will continue to run the day-to-day operations of the program, with the same effervescent warmth and professional expertise that she has shown for the past two decades — ably assisted by supporting teacher Nozomi Taguchi, who is also a qualified nurse.

There are no immediate changes planned for the classroom environment — which meets all of the high standards set by Tokyo Metropolitan Government — but the curriculum, as usual, will be full of discovery and new surprises daily, as it has always been.

As the mother of one of our students said, “Learning, love, and laughter” — that sums up the spirit of St. Alban’s Nursery and what everyone involved is trying to achieve — bringing out the unique individual in each child, in a highly personalized, confidence-building environment, through a combination of carefully devised challenges, new experiences, and fun. Parents are always very welcome to participate in activities at any time.
