Making moving pictures at Gregg International School

At GREGG International School in Jiyugaoka, students have been having fun making five-second animations. Students draw and cut out characters, and practise moving them slowly to achieve the stop-motion effect. Students in grades 1 to 3 drew airplanes and made them chase each other and do loop-the-loops. The students in grades 4 to 6 made more complex animations with several layers of foreground and background that moved to create the illusion of motion, as a fishing boat on the ocean became a meal for a gigantic shark. The older students, with their finer motor control, could create smooth motion and worked very patiently to create good animations. Creating these short films is fun and easy — it takes only 30 minutes from start to finish! — SUE SOUTHERN
